A summer road trip through the Alps
Last summer I made a road trip that began in Bürserberg (Austria), a mountain village known for its green alpine meadows and beautiful hiking trails. It was the perfect place to start the journey: peaceful, picturesque and surrounded by mountains.
From there I drove towards the Arlberg, a region famous for its ski resorts in winter, but in summer a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The high passes, mountain villages and panoramic views make it a place where you can endlessly enjoy nature.
The trip then continued to Mals in South Tyrol (Italy), a charming town with narrow streets and historic buildings. The highlight here is the old castle of Mals, towering above the landscape and offering a glimpse into the region’s medieval history. Not far away lies one of the most unique sights of the Alps: the Reschensee (Lago di Resia). In the middle of this lake, the tower of a submerged church rises from the water – an iconic sight and a must-see for anyone visiting the region.
The route continued through Liechtenstein, a small but impressive country. In the capital Vaduz stands the Castle of Liechtenstein, still inhabited by the princely family. From here you have a wonderful view over the valley. Another special spot is the wooden bridge connecting Liechtenstein with Switzerland – a covered bridge more than a hundred years old, forming an idyllic transition between the two countries.
In Switzerland I made a stop at the Heidi Village in Maienfeld, where you can experience the world of Johanna Spyri’s famous children’s book. A nostalgic place, surrounded by vineyards and mountains. Further along awaited a spectacular natural wonder: the Rheinfall, Europe’s largest waterfall. The roaring water and immense power of the Rhine are truly impressive and form a perfect finale to the journey.
This road trip took me from charming villages and medieval castles to iconic natural wonders. From the tranquility of Bürserberg to the power of the Rheinfall – it became a journey full of contrasts, culture and unforgettable landscapes.
