Road trip along the Normandy coast to Le Mont Saint-Michel
A road trip along the coast of Northern France and Normandy is a journey through impressive landscapes, charming villages and historic sites. The starting point is Cap Blanc-Nez, where the high cliffs offer panoramic views over the Channel. Not far away lies Tardinghen, a quiet spot known for its wide beaches and unspoiled nature – perfect for an early stop.
Through Equihen-Plage and Le Portel, you discover the lively fishing atmosphere and the charm of coastal villages, before heading towards Saint-Martin-aux-Buneaux and Les Petites Dalles, where picturesque valleys and chalk cliffs alternate. At Saint-Léonard and Grainval, you can enjoy the calm character of the Norman coast, far away from the crowds.
The highlight along the way is undoubtedly Étretat, famous for its imposing rock arches and natural formations such as the iconic Aiguille. Fécamp, with its maritime heritage and impressive abbey, is also a place worth taking the time to explore.
The journey ends in a fairytale setting at Le Mont Saint-Michel, the iconic tidal island that has enchanted visitors for centuries with its medieval abbey. A perfect finale to a road trip full of nature, culture and history.
The Atlantic coast – from Les Sables d’Olonne to Spain
The French Atlantic coast is perfect for a road trip: wide beaches, lively surf spots and atmospheric coastal towns follow one another. Start in Les Sables d’Olonne, known for its long boulevard and charming fishing harbor, and drive via Longeville-sur-Mer, where beaches are surrounded by pine forests and dunes.
Further south you’ll reach Plage Surveillée d’Hourtin Plage and Mimizan, both popular with surfers and beach lovers. Here you can feel the relaxed vibe of the Atlantic coast, with endless sandy beaches and powerful waves.
The route takes you past Seignosse and Hossegor, internationally renowned as France’s surf capitals, where the ocean and beach life take center stage. A little further lies Biarritz, the elegant seaside resort where grandeur meets surf.
After a short drive you arrive in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a charming town with a mix of Basque culture, colorful houses and a beautiful bay. You finish in Hendaye, the southernmost point of the French Atlantic coast, with a wide beach and views of the Spanish border.
From here, it’s easy to cross into Spain to continue your adventure along the impressive Basque coast.
